In this career, your job duties include all aspects of preparation. Your responsibilities involve steps such as the removal of dirt from the surface and parts due for painting. You may sand, polish, retouch, buff, degrease, or otherwise clean the surface. You may also mix color, blend paint, and load paint into spray-painting equipment. A paint prepper may sometimes need to apply primer to the surface to prepare and protect it until the painters perform their job.
The qualifications that you need to start a career as a paint prepper include a high school diploma and relevant job experience. One of the primary skills that you need for this job is the ability to operate equipment such as a sander, buffer, and spray-painting tools. Painting companies may provide on-the-job training for entry-level employees. If you want to work in the auto body industry, you may choose to go to a trade school and get a certificate in auto body painting or auto body repair.
